Comparison method

How this resort matrix is assembled

The table further down this page exists to make a planning decision, not to sell a room. Every row is built from the same five fields so you can read down a column instead of comparing brochures.

Price bands are planning ranges in US dollars per night, shown for a standard double occupancy stay in the shoulder and high seasons. They are illustrative bands, not live quotes: rates move with dates, room categories, meal plans and availability, and they are confirmed only after a shortlist is matched to your travel window.

Resort selection starts from your non-negotiables, meaning transfer tolerance, board basis, reef access and budget ceiling. Accommodation comparison then puts the surviving properties side by side on those same four fields, so a cheaper nightly band never hides a longer seaplane leg.

Atoll and emirate notes

Reef access and transfer modes, island by island

These are the notes we keep beside the shortlist. They describe how you actually reach the water, not how a brochure frames it. Timings are illustrative: they move with flight schedules, sea state and each resort's cut-off times.

Maldives atolls

North Malé Atoll
Closest group to Velana International. Many islands hold a house reef with a drop-off a short swim from the beach, so no boat is needed for a snorkel. Speedboat 20 to 45 min / seaplane 15 min
South Ari Atoll
Longer crossings, stronger odds of whale sharks and manta cleaning stations. Seaplane is the practical default, and arrivals after dark are not flown. Seaplane 25 to 40 min / speedboat from 90 min
Baa Atoll
Hanifaru Bay season drives demand from roughly May to November. Reefs are shallow and protected, and several islands add a marine park fee at check-in. Seaplane 30 to 45 min / domestic flight plus speedboat

UAE emirates

Dubai
Creek and Jumeirah hotels reach the shoreline in minutes, but coral is limited and snorkelling usually means an offshore boat trip. Airport to resort is a road transfer. Road 20 to 45 min / reef by boat trip
Ras Al Khaimah
A quieter coast with mangroves and a fringing reef off Al Marjan. Access is by road, from either Dubai or RAK airport. Road 60 to 75 min from Dubai
Fujairah
East coast on the Gulf of Oman, holding the most developed coral in the country. The road climbs over the mountains, so plan a full morning for it. Road 90 to 120 min from Dubai

Transfers and logistics

Transfer notes: seaplane, speedboat, road

The windows below come from published schedules and past arrival patterns. No time is guaranteed. Weather, daylight limits, immigration queues and your actual flight movement decide the final sequence, and we confirm it in writing before you pay for anything.

  1. Seaplane to the outer atolls

    25-45 min airborne daylight only

The fastest option for resorts far from Male. Seaplanes stop flying before dusk, so a late landing usually means an overnight near the airport and a morning flight out. Soft bags are weighed, and the usual allowance sits near 20-25 kg per guest.

  2. Speedboat to the near atolls

45-90 min on water runs after dark

Boats work around the clock on the closer atolls, which suits night arrivals. Crossing time grows with swell between May and November, and the ride is genuinely bumpy on exposed routes.

  3. Domestic flight plus boat

55 min flight, 20-40 min boat two legs

Used for the southern atolls. Two legs mean two sets of delays, so we build a buffer into the arrival day rather than promising a same-day check-in.

  4. Road transfer in the UAE

75-120 min by car Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah

No water leg, no daylight limit. Peak-hour traffic around Dubai can add 30 minutes, so we schedule pickups against your flight rather than a fixed clock time.

Send your trip brief and get a shortlist with transfer notes.

Tell us your dates, travellers, board basis and budget band. You receive a written comparison of two or three resorts with seaplane or speedboat timing attached, so the decision rests on logistics rather than brochure photographs.
